Distance Exhibition Success!

The first half of our foreign exchange exhibition, Distance, has come to its conclusion. Casa Carnacini, our Argentinian venue, with curator and DiB member Romina Berenice Canet, united illustrators from both countries, exposing their responses to the theme of 'Distance' to a new audience and delivering the first set of gifts from the Bristolian artists to their Argentine counterparts.

'Distance' is far from over - we are currently making preparations for part 2, an exhibition here in Bristol. Keep an eye on this blog for further developments!

The typically hirsute Drawn in Bristol is all set for a thoroughly pogonotrophous few weeks this March. Those among you with a slow growth rate (or worse, sparse distribution) may consider this notice more than adequate for you to get at least halfway into character; lay the bic and the badger brush to rest as we welcome Simon David Mills onto Bristol’s Grain Barge for his very latest exhibition, BEARDS.

Bristol-based Simon’s famed naïve style begins as doodles on scraps of paper, forming the basis for his characters and subjects which are translated onto ‘found’ canvasses; discarded materials and objects that find a new life among his constellation of creations. Old wood, metal, roads, walls and scrap cars are subject to Simon’s inks, sticks, brushes and spray paint... not to mention the electric jigsaw.

The exhibition will run from March 7th to 31st, and we’re inviting you to come down on Wednesday the 7th at 8:00pm to scratch your chin with us at the opening night!

High Notes / Low Notes Opening Night

The 13th of January saw the launch party of our music-themed exhibition, High Notes / Low Notes in the Crypt of St George’s Concert Hall in the heart of Bristol. The exhibition features work by DiB members Michelle Barker, Alex Bertram-Powell, Katy Christianson, Bex Glover, Jess of the Lions, Loch Ness and Laurie Stansfield.

Drawn In Bristol is happy to report that the event was extremely well-attended; patrons of the Acoustic Festival poured into the room to admire the artwork and catch a rackety performance by scrimshaw troubadours Boxcar Aldous Huxley:

A couple of hours’ festivities passed, with alcohol being responsibly consumed in the appreciation of finest illustration talent.

The exhibition has been extended to mid-March, so if you haven’t had the opportunity yet, take the briefest detour from the bustle of Park Street and take in some fantastic artwork!

Featuring work by Michelle Barker, Alex Bertram-Powell, Katy Christianson, Bex Glover, Jess of the Lions, Loch Ness and Laurie Stansfield, the exhibition presents each illustrator's unique take on the theme of music in the beautiful and unusual setting of the former church crypt.

Come along for a drink or two and a FREE performance by folk band Boxcar Aldous Huxley in the Crypt, followed by the launch of the Bristol Acoustic Music Festival (tickets £7) featuring Bashema, Benny Sensus, Katey Brooks and Steve Page.

The evening is also a chance to preview 'A Postcard From Nowhere', an exhibition by Mexican painter Pilar Cortés Núñez.

Distance Exhibition in Argentina featuring Drawn in Bristol members

Curated by our member Romina Berenice Canet, 'Distancia / Distance' is a joint exhibition by artists and illustrators from Argentine and Bristol on the theme of distance.

Held in 'Casa Carnacini' this exhibition might be a little far for most UK people to get to, but watch out for a second showing of all the work sometime early this year.

Slumber is an illustrator based in Bristol, England and is part of Drawn in Bristol.
Here, for the first time, he presents an exhibition based around his character 'SlumberBean'.

SlumberBean is totally bushed; he's always on the lookout for a place to rest his sleepy little head. No one knows who he is or where he's going – but he's been around. And no one's sure why he's always so tired... when asked, he just yawns… smiles politely… then sleeps (Full of beans – he is not).
His latest adventures are lovingly captured on archival quality Somerset enhanced art paper.
Each print is signed and numbered by the artist.
But be quick, they're limited editions… if you snooze you lose.
