Upcoming Exhibition: A Monster Slice of Funk

Drawn in Bristol illustrator Poppy Reid is bringing the funk to The Gallimaufry next month with her typographic showcase, A Monster Slice of Funk, starting from Wednesday 6 May.

The exhibition is a celebration of funk music with a bright and bold attitude, inspired by lyrics and musings from the masters of funk.  Poppy's clear passion for hand-rendered typography and custom lettering forms the foundation of her new show, bring together pattern, layers and funky shapes to create the unique and playful letterforms which are characteristic of Poppy's work.

After a brief encounter with traditional letterpress techniques, Poppy now draws and screen prints all of her work by hand in the Drawn in Bristol studio.

'The decision to move to Bristol from Cornwall came about after a space at the Drawn in Bristol studio became available, which has allowed me to screen print my work onto various materials, and to my delight, has resulted in similar textures to that of the letterpress.  Shortly afterwards, I became a member of the collective and am now a proactive member of the group.'
Each of the pieces in Poppy's upcoming Gallimaufry show are editioned screen prints, in limited runs of ten, with the exception of four original pieces, which have been hand-finished in custom frames specially made by Poppy's dad.
